Move Tasks
This guide shows you how to move work in NUU Operations. You move one task, many tasks, or a whole section. At the end the work sits where it belongs, with its subtasks.
Prerequisites
- You have a workspace open. See About Workspaces.
- You know that a task lives in a section, and that the backlog is a section. See About Tasks and Backlogs.
Open the Move dialog
Select a task in a list, point at a task row, or open the task. Press M. The Move dialog opens. The key does nothing while the cursor is in a text field.
You can also open Move from the menu of a task row, or from Go to: press Cmd+K and choose "Move this task".
The dialog opens at once, because Ops keeps a live list of the places of the workspace. It shows your recent places first, then the places of the current project. Type part of a name to search every place.
Choose a place
Choose where the task goes:
| You choose | The task goes to |
|---|---|
| A section | That section |
| A project | The backlog section of the project |
| A deliverable | The first open section of the deliverable. If it has no open section, the service makes one. |
| An active deployment | The inbox of the deployment |
Press Enter to move. Press Esc to cancel. The task does not copy. It moves.
After the move, a message shows where the task went. Choose Open to go there, or Undo to move it back.
The dialog also has the choice No home (unplaced). It takes the task out of every section. Use it only when the task has no place yet.
Subtasks move too
When you move a task, its subtasks move with it. The whole tree goes to the new place. You do not move subtasks one by one.
To change the tree itself, use the subtasks of the task. You can put a subtask under another subtask, or take it up one level. A subtask that goes up from the first level becomes a root task in the same home. See About Tasks and Backlogs.
Move many tasks
Select more than one task in a list. Press M, or choose "Move the selection" in Go to. Choose one place for all of them.
Each selected task moves with its subtasks. Use this to clear a backlog or an inbox in one step.
Move a section
Open the menu in the header of the section. Choose Move…. Choose a new home: a project, a deliverable, or a deployment.
The section keeps its tasks, their subtasks, and their order. It goes to the end of its new home. Use this when work that started in the project becomes part of a deliverable.
A backlog, a queue, or an inbox section cannot move.
Capture first, commit later
The backlog is the place for work that is not committed yet. Make the task there. Move it into a section of a deliverable when the work becomes part of a delivery.
A move from a backlog into another section clears the priority. Other moves keep it.
Check the result
Open the new place. The task should be there, with the same subtask count.
If the task has an owner, that person can get a notification. If a task of yours moved, you can get a notification.
Search can find the task in the active workspace. Activity records the move.
