About Deployments

A deployment is something that you keep running: a site, an app, a service, or a place. Work does not stop when you deliver it. A deployment collects the work that comes up while it runs.

A deployment is abstract. It has no URL and no chain of versions. It is a name for a thing that runs, with an inbox for its work.

What a deployment holds

  • Name. What people call it.
  • Version. Optional. A free label, for example 1.4 or Spring launch. Ops does not check it.
  • Status. Active, Paused, or Retired.
  • Project. Optional. The project that the deployment belongs to.
  • Notes. Text that the page shows.
  • Context. Hidden text for search and suggestions. The page does not show it.
  • Check-up. Optional. A schedule of check-ups: daily, weekly, or monthly.

A workspace can have many deployments. A project can have many deployments too.

Status

Active means the deployment runs now. When a deployment becomes active, the service makes its inbox section.

Paused means it does not run for now. Retired means it is finished.

If you delete a deployment, its inbox stays as a plain section. The tasks in it are not lost.

The deployments list shows active deployments first, then paused ones, then retired ones.

The inbox

The inbox is a section of the deployment. It holds the tasks that come up while the deployment runs. See About Sections.

A task in the inbox can have a tag. The tag tells you what kind of work it is:

TagMeaning
FeedbackSomething a person said about it
HotfixA bug to fix now
OngoingUpkeep that goes on while it runs
RecurringComes back on a schedule

You can add a task to the inbox, do it there, or move it to another section.

Check-ups

A deployment can have a check-up schedule: daily, weekly, or monthly. At each due time, the service adds a task "Check" and the name of the deployment to the inbox, with the tag Ongoing. Then it sets the next due time.

Check-ups run only while the deployment is active. The service does not add a second check-up task while the last one is still open in the inbox. You can also add a check-up task at once with Check now.

Use a check-up to look at the deployment on a regular basis. Find bugs, add hotfix tasks, and move work to where it belongs.

Recurring tasks

A task can repeat: daily, weekly, or monthly. When you mark a recurring task done, the service makes its next copy in the same place. The work comes back without a new capture.

The loop

A deployment and its deliverables form a loop:

  1. A deliverable ships to a deployment.
  2. The deployment runs. Tasks come up in its inbox.
  3. You select inbox tasks and start a deliverable from the inbox. The service makes a new deliverable with one section, and moves the selected tasks into that section. The deliverable records that it came from the deployment, and it ships to the deployment.
  4. You do the work and mark the deliverable done. The deployment runs on, and new work comes up in its inbox.

Each turn of the loop is one deliverable. The deployment stays. See Run a Deployment.
