Set Up Your Profile

This guide takes you from a signed-in NUU account to a public profile that other products can show. At the end you have a public record with a display name and any other fields you choose to fill.

Prerequisites

  • You have a NUU account.
  • You can sign in.
  • You do not already have a public profile. If a ghost already exists for you, follow Claim a Ghost Profile instead.

Sign in and open your profile

Sign in with your NUU account. Open your profile.

The first visit sets up your account in NUU Profiles. This step does not create a public profile. You still need to create one, or claim a ghost.

If you already have a public profile, you see a summary of it. Skip to the edit step.

Create a public profile

Choose to create a public profile from scratch. Enter a display name. This name is what other products show when they name you. You can change it later.

The service creates a public profile and attaches it to your account. If your NUU account has a username, and that username is free, it becomes your handle. If it is not free, the public profile has no handle yet. The permanent identity is still valid.

Fill in the public record

Open the editor for your public profile. Set the fields that you want visitors and other products to see.

Typical fields:

  • Display name
  • Disambiguator, if several people share your name
  • Tagline
  • Pronouns, location, and website
  • Birth year. You can keep this private.
  • Bio
  • Affiliations with organisations or platforms
  • Publications
  • Extra links
  • Avatar

You do not set the handle here. Change the username on your NUU account if you want a different handle. Email also comes from your NUU account.

Save your changes. The public profile updates. Other NUU products read this public copy.

Check the public view

Preview the public view before you save, or open your public page after you save. Private fields stay hidden in that view. This is what visitors see. It is also the record that other products use for attribution. See About Attribution.
