About Sharing
Sharing lets other people read a document you own. You stay the owner. They get read access. They cannot parse, reparse, share, or delete the document.
NUU Docs has three ways to open a document to others. They are not the same. See Core Ideas for the nouns share and public link.
Share with a person
You share with a person by email. That person can then open the document while signed in.
If NUU already knows that email, the share is active. If the person has not signed in yet, the share stays pending until they do. You cannot share a document with yourself.
Access is read only. A shared reader can open the source pane and the parsed pane. If the document is not parsed yet, they wait for you to parse it.
Sharing also gives that person access to the Surf output for the document. The library share and the Surf access travel together.
You can remove a person later. Removal drops their access.
Public among signed-in NUU users
You can make a document public inside NUU Docs. Then any signed-in NUU user can open it from the public list in the library.
This is still a NUU Docs view. The reader needs a NUU account. The document shows your name as owner.
This is not the public link. The public list is for people who already use NUU.
You can turn this off. The document then leaves the public list.
Public link in NUU Surf
A public link is a read-only link that opens in NUU Surf. The visitor does not need a NUU account.
That view is limited. It has no chat, notes, or highlights. It is a reader for the parsed document, not a full workspace.
You can leave the public link open to anyone who has it. You can also set a password. With a password, the visitor enters it once per browser session. A password is a simple gate. It is not strong protection.
You copy the public link from sharing on the document. You can turn the public link off.
What a reader can see
A reader who can open the document in NUU Docs sees the source and the parsed content. They see parse state. They see report status if a problem report exists.
They do not become an owner. They do not see your other documents. They do not manage your tags or collections.
The library has three lists so this stays clear:
- Your documents are the ones you own.
- Shared with you are documents other people shared with you by email.
- Public are documents other signed-in users marked public inside NUU Docs.
What sharing does not do
Sharing does not copy the document. There is still one document and one owner.
Sharing does not publish a new version. Readers see the current parsed content. If you reparse, they see the new latest version unless they pick an older one in the parsed pane.
Sharing a document is not sharing a collection. A collection is your grouping. Other people do not receive the collection when you share one document from it.
