Read by Zooming Through Layers
This guide is the main reading motion. You open a completed surf. You move from the top summary down to the original text, one section at a time.
Prerequisites
- A surf on the document is completed.
- You can open the reader. Sign in, or use a public reading link or a wave.
Start at the top layer
Open the document in the reader. You see the top cards. Each card is a section summary. Read the titles first. That is your map.
Look at the depth mark and the word ratio on a card. A small ratio means the card is a tight compress. Zoom in if you need more than the summary.
Zoom in on one section
Do not click the card body to zoom. The body is for reading and for selecting text. Click the empty space beside the card. The card is replaced by the cards under it. The rest of the document stays at the depth you left it.
Read the new cards. Zoom in again on the one that holds the claim you need. Repeat until you reach original text, or until the summary is enough.
Zoom out
Use the other mouse button on the empty space beside the cards. The open section collapses one level. You see the parent summary again. Other sections do not move.
You can leave one section fully open and keep the next section closed. That mix is normal. It is the point of independent zoom.
Jump with the outline
Open the side panel if it is closed. Use the outline of headings and the outline of summaries. Pick a row to jump to that card. Expand or collapse from the outline when you want the canvas to match.
If the page feels too open, collapse all from the outline. If you want the full tree, expand all. Then zoom only the section you are reading.
Adjust the canvas
Open reader settings if the cards are hard to scan. You can indent cards by layer, or lay them out at full width. You can change text size. You can turn on reading aids. These changes do not alter the surf. They only change how you see it.
What you should have
You can hold the whole document at a glance. You can open one section to original text without losing the others. You know how to zoom in, zoom out, and jump from the outline.
