See How a Document Connects
This guide shows how you read the connections around one document. You use the title tree for place. You use the context rail for backlinks and media.
Onyx does not show a graph. The tree and the rail are the map.
Prerequisites
- You have a mesh open in Onyx.
- The mesh has more than one document, or you can create them.
- You know what a backlink is. See Links Embeds and Indexes.
Open the document
Open the mesh. Find the document in the title tree. Open it.
The centre shows the body. Wikilinks in the body are outbound links. They go from this document to other titles.
If the tree is long, search by title in the rail. Then open the match.
Read the title tree
Look at the left rail. The indent shows hierarchy. A nested row is a child title, not a folder.
The tree answers "where does this title sit". It does not answer "what links here". A document can sit at the root and still have many backlinks. A nested document can have none.
Show the context rail
Show the context rail if it is hidden. The top of that rail is backlinks. The bottom is media.
If no document is open, the rail tells you to open one.
Read backlinks
The backlink list is every document that links to the open title. The list is sorted by title.
Open a backlink. That document becomes the centre. Its own backlinks then fill the rail.
If the list is empty, nothing in this mesh links here yet. Add a wikilink from another document. Save that document. The backlink appears on this title.
Follow a rename
Rename the open document. After the batch applies, open a document that used to link here. The wikilink now names the new title. The backlink list on the new title includes that document.
The old title is gone. There is no second row to clean up.
Read media around the document
In the media list, choose the current document. You see the files this body embeds, in document order.
Choose all media. You see every file in the mesh.
Open a file from the list. If this document embeds it, the file opens as a tab. If another document embeds it, that document opens first. If nothing embeds it, the file opens on its own.
You can remove a media file you no longer need. Confirm the removal. Embeds that named it will no longer resolve.
What the rails do not show
The rails do not group documents by tag. They do not draw a network of nodes. Tags still exist on documents. You can use them in the body and in properties. The everyday map in Onyx is the title tree plus backlinks.
