Share a Description

This guide shows you how to let other people read a Description. You can make the record public. You can keep it private and share it with named people. You can also hide single fields from everyone but yourself.

Prerequisites

  • You own the Description.
  • You have signed in.
  • You have already saved the Description at least once. Shares need a saved record.

Choose public or private

Open the Description and edit it.

If you want anyone to read the record, set visibility to public. The public registry then lists the Description. People can search the title and open the record.

If you want only named people to read it, keep visibility private. Private is the default.

Visibility does not give other people the right to edit. Only you can edit. Only you can remove the Description.

Share with named people

If the Description is saved, add emails to the share list. Use the email that the person uses for their NUU account.

Each person who signs in with that email can read the Description. They see it in the list of records shared with them. They cannot edit it. They cannot see your tags.

You can remove an email later. That person then loses access, unless the Description is public.

You do not need a share for a public Description. People can already read it from the public registry.

Keep single fields private

If some values must stay hidden, mark those fields private. Non-owners do not see the values. They may see that a body field is private.

Typical fields to hide are notes, a pasted body, or a summary that is only for you. You cannot hide the title. You cannot hide the permanent identity. Those fields must stay readable so that other people can still cite the record.

Read About Visibility for the full rule.

Save and check

Save your changes.

Open the Description as a reader would. If it is public, open the public view. Confirm that private fields do not show their values. Confirm that the title and identity still show.

If you shared with a person, that person must sign in with the same email. They then find the record in the shared list.

What they get

A public reader can find the Description in the public registry and open it.

A shared reader can open the Description and read the fields you did not mark private.

Neither reader can edit the record. Neither reader can see your tags.
